Chapter 01 · Storied Living
There's a 135-year-old house in our plaza.
A 135-year-old Victorian home was still standing when we broke ground on First & Royal. We didn't demolish it. We restored it and made it the heart of the plaza. You'll walk past it every morning.
Designed by architect Samuel Maclure and built for Edward Montague Nelson Woods — newly married barrister and son of the local Archdeacon — the E.M.N. Woods House stood at the corner of First Street and Royal Avenue for over a century. His wife, Emily Sophia Dickinson, was the daughter of New Westminster's own Mayor. The nearby Dickinson Street still bears her family name.
When we broke ground on First & Royal, the house was still standing. Rather than demolish it, we moved it. Sixty-five feet south on the same street, the original 1890 structure was carefully relocated — the 1958 stucco stripped away, the original wood gables and leaded glass windows restored exactly as Maclure designed them.
